Flaxseed – Just one very good product determined in a test

People who want to eat consciously and healthily often choose to use flaxseeds. These have a high content of protein, fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. However, what is not part of a balanced and healthy diet are harmful substances. But these were found in some products in a recent test.

MOSH and MOAH were found in several samples

MOSH and MOAH are mineral oil hydrocarbons – MOSH can accumulate in the organs and MOAH is suspected to be carcinogenic. Currently there are no limit values for mineral oil hydrocarbons, but a respective regulation is already being worked on.

However, there are orientation values for MOSH/MOAH in oilseeds:

  • 4 mg/kg MOSH
  • 5 mg/kg MOAH

The orientation value for MOSH was exceeded in one of 20 tested samples.

Prussic acid detected

Cyanogenic glycosides, from which prussic acid can be formed, have also been detected in some products. Excessive consumption can lead to prussic acid poisoning. According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, a daily intake of 15g should therefore not be exceeded. There is also no legal limit for prussic acid, but an EU-wide maximum limit is currently being discussed.
