The newly released guidance for nutrition and supplement facts labeling provides detailed instructions for converting previous units of measure, conversion factors, and calculation examples for certain nutrients.
The 2016 amended FDA regulations included updated Reference Daily Intakes (RDIs) for folate, niacin, vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin E.
The new regulations require the following units for both foods and dietary supplements sold in the United States:
- Folate: mcg DFE
- Niacin: mg
- Vitamin A: mcg
- Vitamin D: mcg
- Vitamin E: mg
The new nutrition facts label compliance date is January 1, 2020, for manufacturers with $10 million or more in annual food sales and January 1, 2021, for manufacturers with less than $10 million in annual food sales.
