Cannabis Products – What do Manufacturers have to consider?

Food from the hemp plant is strongly in the trend. Since the ban on the cultivation of hemp, Cannabis sativa L., was lifted in 1996, numerous products have come onto the market and are enjoying great popularity. Here one finds among other things hemp seeds, hemp protein powder or also hemp tea.

To use cannabis in foodstuffs, however, the content of psychoactive substances must be very low and the products must comply with the legal requirements.

Due to the different types of hemp with partly significant contents of 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is relevant for narcotics law, it is crucial for food producers to know the exact content of cannabinoids. The analysis requires a special approval by the Federal Opium Agency, as the THC reference standard is a narcotic.

If the content of 9-THC is above the threshold value of 0.2%, they can have a psychoactive effect at high consumption.

Since the hemp plant contains a lot of water, mold can easily develop during storage. Above all aflatoxins are very poisonous and already in small concentrations damaging for the human being. Therefore, the regulatory authorities have laid down the maximum permissible limit values in Regulation (EU) No. 165/2010. The following limit values apply in the EU: 2 μg-kg-1 for aflatoxin B1 and 4 μg-kg-1 for the sum of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2 in various foodstuffs.

In order to increase the yield in hemp cultivation, pesticides are used, so that these should also be analyzed in the hemp products. Among the most frequently found pesticides in cannabis are the fungicide myclobutanil and the insecticides inidacloprid, abamectin and spiromesifen.

One of the main problems with cannabis extracts is that pesticides and cannabinoids have similar chemical properties in common and are thus equally dissolved during extraction from the plant and thus get into the final product. Since the result of further processing is a concentrate of the active ingredients, the pollutant load is up to ten times higher than that of the plant.

To ensure that your hemp products reach the market safely, it is important to have appropriate analyses carried out.
