Cascara – approval as a novel food

Feb 14, 2022

The European Union has approved Cascara as a novel food (traditional from third countries).
Dried pulp of coffee cherry (cascara) and its infusion can be placed on the market in the EU from 4th February 2022.

The authorization, specifications as well as conditions of use are set in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/47 of 13th January 2022 authorizing the placing on the market of dried pulp of coffee cherry of the species Coffea arabica L. and/or Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner, as well as the infusion thereof, as a traditional food from a third country.

This implementing regulation granted the application for the use of dried pulp of coffee cherry of the above mentioned species, as well as the infusion thereof, as an ingredient for teas (including ready-to-drink beverages) and flavored beverages.

The annex describes the specification and additional specific labeling requirements.

The traditional food consists of dried unroasted pulp of coffee cherry of the species Coffea arabica L. and/or Coffea canephora Pierre ex A. Froehner (genus: Coffea, family: Rubiaceae) and its infusion. The infusion may be used as such or in concentrated or dried form.

The trade name to be indicated in the label of the respective novel food is “pulp of coffee cherry” and/or “cascara (pulp of coffee cherry)”, and/or “infusion of pulp of coffee cherry” and/or “dried infusion of pulp of coffee cherry”.

If the caffeine content of the product containing the novel food exceeds 150 mg/l (by itself or after reconstitution), the label shall include the following statement: “High caffeine content. Not recommended for children, pregnant women and nursing mothers” in the same field of view as the name of the food, followed by the caffeine content expressed in mg per 100 ml. QSI offers this service of determination of the caffeine content (QSI-Code 25518).

We are also pleased to analyze the parameters defined in the appendix regarding the specification of the product for you. The respective analysis code numbers are given.
